The Africa Museum in Tervuren was established in the early 20th century under the reign of Leopold II, the Belgian monarch known for his brutal colonisation of the Congo. For decades, the museum was accused of using its collections to cover up the violence perpetrated by the Belgian state. Can a museum implement reparations policies? Sanaz Azari’s camera follows the staff and visitors of the newly renovated museum in search of an answer. (PC)

Sanaz Azari was born in Isfahan (Iran) in 1981. She grew up and lives in Brussels where, after studying photography, she went on to study set design at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels de La Cambre. At the same time as her studies, she took intensive drama classes for three years using the Stanislavski method. In 2010 she wrote and directed her first documentary, Salaam Isfahan, followed by I comme Iran and Backstage action (original title: Faites sortir les figurants).
