Limits, archives and essays. A retrospective on Charlie Shackleton

Charlie Shackleton

Charlie Shackleton (London, 1983) situates his practice on the edges of documentary filmmaking. The essay takes form, the archive becomes a storyline and the limitations of the medium cease to be obstacles and instead take centre stage in the film. Over the course of a week, La Casa Encendida hosts a programme that traces his work through four sessions and a workshop. His films always begin with a question about cinema itself. How a story is constructed. What happens when a film can’t be made? What remains of an actor once they are gone? Through the documentary, Shackleton calls reality into question, pushing it to its limits before ultimately dismantling it. The programme features Beyond Clueless (2014), The Afterlight (2021) —screened from the sole 35mm print— and a screening of five essay-style short films entitled ‘Conversations in a Pub’. Five video essays by Charlie Shackleton, along with Zodiac Killer Project (2025), winner of the NEXT Innovator Award at Sundance. A three-day workshop exploring how to turn the constraints of filmmaking into creative opportunities.

This will be the first retrospective exhibition on Shackleton to be held in Spain.

This programme is run in collaboration with Claudia De La Iglesia, Didac Humà and Marta Lozoya.
