The truth of the exile’s plight lies between the harsh reality of a tragic political present and the narrative escape, in the tension between documentary and fiction. In Unfinished Diary, Marilú Mallet explores her own subjectivity, oscillating between certainty and doubt. In Double Portrait, María Luisa Señoret paints her daughter Marilú, who in turn films the process. Within this circular relationship, the filmmaker constructs a poetics of portraiture as something that is never finished, a process of exploration in which memory, identity and political history merge until they become indistinguishable.
