A samurai is travelling upstream through foreign territory. At the same time, two Japanese women explore, through improvisation, the blurred line between sound and noise. Blending performance, landscape and sound experimentation, Río creates an experience of estrangement and attentiveness, where movement becomes attention and listening a way of inhabiting the unknown. A musician, he creates performances in which experimentation with sound is the starting point. In his work, which always has a playful component, he seeks to engage with the environment and everyday life.
He is a member of the experimental performance collective Orquestina de pigmeos (together with Chus Domínguez), and he regularly collaborates with artists such as Silvia Zayas, Alex Reynolds and the Societat Doctor Alonso theatre company. He plays the drums, percussion and electronic instruments. He creates music and designs soundscapes for theatre and contemporary dance companies.
He designs tools and gives educational workshops focused on listening and sound creation at various institutions, including CA2M (Dos de Mayo Art Centre) in Móstoles and MNCARS (Reina Sofía National Art Museum), among others.
Audiovisual artist. His work has been exhibited and awarded prizes at numerous international festivals and art centres. Together with Nilo Gallego, he is a member of the site-specific performance collective Orquestina de pigmeos, with whom he has staged performances in various European countries. Professor in the Diploma on Documentary Film at the School of Cinematography and Audiovisual of the Community of Madrid (ECAM) and in the Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts at the University of Salamanca, as well as a guest lecturer in various master’s courses and workshops.
