Synopsis

Vinko Rozman, with his diverse body of work and distinctive authorial poetics, is today regarded as one of the key figures of Slovenian avant-garde cinema. Between 1963 and 1971, working within the framework of Kino Klub Ljubljana and often on the threshold between documentary and experiment, he created more than twenty meticulously crafted short films, unfolding across socio political reflections, sports films, conceptual inquiries, intimate cinematic meditations, and it is not uncommon for these works to incorporate quotations from notable literary texts.

The present programme offers a rare insight into the key works of the author, bringing together works that are now part of the special collections of the Slovenian Cinematheque. It traces the evolution of Rozman’s artistic language alongside a broader shift in sensibility characteristic of the period.

Beginning with contemplative documentary observations of rural life, the films evoke the textures of village existence, the gradual migration toward urban centres, and the quiet erosion of traditional worlds, including the growing emptiness of religious symbols. From these grounded observational beginnings, Rozman’s cinema slowly transitions into a mode of experimental modernism that is political, formally innovative, and intellectually rigorous. At certain moments, the works resonate with the spirit of contemporary avant garde movements and reflect a shared impulse toward rethinking cinematic language. The programme ultimately culminates in a series of intimate cinematic love letters, bringing the trajectory full circle from collective realities to deeply personal expression.
