Slovenian experimental cinema, created on the margins of the Yugoslav film industry, remained largely overlooked for decades until the Slovenian Cinematheque began systematically preserving and restoring it in recent years. This program brings together a diverse selection of works that trace a rich arc, from postwar existential reflections and the anxieties of the atomic age to the playful and countercultural spirit of the 1970s. It includes Fantastic Ballad, now considered the first true Slovenian experimental film, an early example of flicker film, films by Vasko Pregelj, a neobaroque master of dark and evocative landscapes, works by the enigmatic OM Production collective, and Andrej Zdravič’s Breath, a poetic masterpiece that follows the wind through the streets of New York. Together, these films reveal how original and daring cinematic languages emerged simultaneously in different contexts, often without direct contact, and are only now being rediscovered, reminding us how much remains to be seen and understood.
