Workshop with Charlie Shackleton. DIY: How to Conceive Your Own Film, Using Limitations as Inspiration
Synopsis

A three-day workshop exploring how the simplest ideas can give rise to complex stories, how films develop their own distinct character and how to turn the limitations of filmmaking into creative opportunities.

Facing a blank page, coming up with an idea or taking the first steps on a project can feel like taking a leap of faith. The challenge of making your own film can be both exciting and daunting. Even so, the answer isn’t always about coming up with a big idea, nor does it mean shrinking away from our shortcomings. Focusing on the small things, on everyday life, on what’s around us or what we already have can open up better paths.

The workshop is based on this premise: starting small. Over the course of three days, the creative process will be explored through three key themes. First, the value of small ideas: resisting the pressure that bigger is better and discovering that complex and profound ideas can also emerge from simplicity. Second, we will explore the personality of the films: do they really have one? What is it based on? Does it reflect the personalities of the creators? And finally, learning to view constraints not as obstacles, but as tools for generating creative solutions to the limitations of filmmaking.
