Synopsis

What memories does a seed hold when it is torn from the earth? Estados generales follows this trail to explore dispossession, history and its echoes in the present. With images of remarkable delicacy, blending landscape, archive and living matter, Mauricio Freyre composes a film in which colonial violence is not presented as something distant, but as a mark that still endures. Mauricio Freyre

Mauricio Freyre is an artist and a filmmaker. His work unfolds at the intersection of film, installation and performance, exploring blind spots, accidents and distortions linked to the project of modernity/coloniality. In 2025, he undertook a research residency at the Reina Sofía Museum as part of L’Internationale’s Museum of the Commons – Climate programme, during which he presented the film Mal de ojo. That same year, his first feature film, Estados Generales, premiered in the official selection at FID Marseille and IDFA. This project, also conceived as a three-channel installation, takes viewers on a journey in which seeds preserved at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Madrid are returned to the southern coast of Peru, offering a counter-narrative to colonial dispossession. In 2021, his two-channel installation Interspecies Architecture was presented at the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale. In 2019, he won the Peruvian Ministry of Culture’s National Prize for Experimental Films for his film A IS CID. He has exhibited his work at Haus der Kulturen der Welt, TENT, CentroCentro, Telefónica Foundation, Bisagra, W139 and at festivals such as Pesaro, Collectif Jeune Cinéma, FIC Valdivia, Strangloscope and Les Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, among others.
