Synopsis

In her first solo feature film, Maureen Fazendeiro portrays the Portuguese Alentejo region through historical and legendary accounts passed down orally by its inhabitants. Songs, struggles, tales and myths are interwoven with first-hand accounts from workers of those lands and letters exchanged between German archaeologists in the 19th century. The seasons follow one another in a region where all the eras of real and imagined history overlap, and where recovering memory also entails bringing to light the conflict between those who care for and inhabit the land and those who exploit it and seek to possess it. Director biography

Maureen Fazendeiro

Maureen Fazendeiro (1989, Créteil, Francia) es directora de cine y guionista. Vive y trabaja en Lisboa. Estudió literatura, arte y cine en la Universidad Denis Diderot de París.

Su primer largometraje, Motu Maeva (2014), se estrenó en el FID Marseille y ganó premios en varios festivales (DocLisboa, Valdivia, Brive, Play-Doc). Esta película y sus otros cortometrajes, Sol Negro (2019, TIFF Wavelength) y Les Habitants (2025, Cinéma du Réel), se han proyectado en festivales de todo el mundo, entre ellos Viennale, Mar del Plata, Jeonju, New Director’s New Films, FICUNAM, Belfort, Angers, Gijón y Seminci, y también se han proyectado en cinematecas y museos como la FIAC de París, la Bienal de Venecia, la Trienal de Aichi, el Palais de Tokyo y el MoMA.

Divide su tiempo entre proyectos individuales y colaboraciones con Miguel Gomes como directora de casting y guionista (Grand Tour, Competición Oficial en Cannes 2024). Juntos codirigieron Diarios de Otsoga (Quincena de Realizadores 2021), estrenada en Portugal, Francia, Estados Unidos, Italia, España y Brasil, y seleccionada en más de cincuenta festivales. Recibieron el premio al Mejor Director en el Festival de Cine de Mar de Plata. También coescribió la próxima película de Miguel Gomes, Savagery.

En 2025, Curtas Vila do Conde dedicó un foco a su trabajo en la sección «New Voices», y su primer largometraje documental, As Estaçoes, se estrenó en competición en Locarno.
