ulian Castronovo updates the classic conventions of film noir to an acutely contemporary context, in which the digital and the physical are not two separate realms, rather they must intertwine to form the framework of what is real. The research for Debut takes the form of a vast catalogue in which physical documents, internet searches and found footage coexist as evidence without any hierarchy. Rather than seeking a resolution, the film portrays that contemporary compulsion to try to make sense of the scattered stimuli to which we are relentlessly exposed in the digital world. (IC)
