Bilbao, 1980. After studying Audiovisual Communication at the University of the Basque Country, he graduated in Film Directing from the ECAM with a short fiction film: Señales de indiferencia (2007), which won the best international short film award at the 2008 FIC Valdivia. In 2008, he founded the collective Los Hijos together with Luis López Carrasco and Natalia Marín Sancho. His first feature film Los materiales (2010), won the Jean Vigo Award for Best Director at the Punto de Vista International Documentary Film Festival. Some of his most notable later work includes Enero 2012 o la apoteosis de Isabel La Católica (2012) and Árboles (2013). A retrospective was done on the work made by Los Hijos at the Mar del Plata International Film Festival. In 2015, Javier Fernández Vázquez began his academic career in the field of anthropology, which has led him to researching issues related to memory, social history and colonialism. Anunciaron tormenta (2020), an investigation into Spain’s colonial past in Equatorial Guinea, is his first solo feature film and it premiered at the 2020 Berlinale.
