If the two Documenta Madrid competitions are looking to discover what cinema can be today and in the future, the new section Back and Forth connects this impulse to the past. Named after the film by celebrated Canadian filmmaker Michael Snow, whose oeuvre also combined different traditions with a wonderful desire for experimentation, Back and Forth brings together contemporary premieres, small retrospectives, tributes and new restorations with the idea of forging links between different cinematographies and film histories across the entire world. In keeping with its natural sense of openness, Back and Forth also extends beyond Cineteca, returning the festival to the Círculo de Bellas Artes and continuing our fruitful connection with Filmin, who are showing a series of films exclusively online.
