Lois Patiño's films have always been concerned with tracing limbos, those characteristic cinematographic spaces in between dream and wakefulness, tradition and modernity. Perhaps his most lyrical work, El sembrador de estrellas travels to night-time Tokyo, superimposing images and referring us to an equally indefinable space, where the play of neon lights and fading twinkles refers to multiple imaginaries, but ends up revealing itself to be deeply personal. Between voice-overs and literary quotations, Patiño achieves a double challenge: to draw the contours of the unreal with an easy hand, and to do so in an Asian culture, a novelty in his filmography.
