Fifteen years after Touki Bouki, Mambéty returned to the two things he cared about the most: cinema and children. The film documents Idrissa Ouédraogo’s shoot of his second feature, Yaaba. Beyond that sensitive tribute, we are also introduced to a nation, Burkina Faso, which remains the only country in West Africa to have developed a film industry of its own, with indigenous production companies, and financial support for direction and distribution. Mambéty uses his depiction of Ouédraogo shooting a story about a grandmother and two children to establish a visual connection between contemporary Africa and the theme of childhood, his other great passion. Parlons grand-mère is is a genuine manifesto about film-making, children and Africa.
