Synopsis

The woman narrates in voiceover, in Japanese, telling the story of a man who arrived in New York from Tokyo in 1988, hired a car and set out across the US. The images that accompany her account show documents and locations pertaining to the trip: flight tickets in a false name, maps, motels, rural homes, campgrounds, bagged up receipts, black and white photos showing pieces of evidence; the strangeness of America rushing past. It’s hard to place from which perspective the woman is speaking, at times she describes the man’s feelings and at others those of people he met along the way, is that what history does? Everyone leaves ripples in their wake, but they’re only visible after the event. (JL)
