Synopsis

The social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s were spearheaded by the charismatic, guru-like figure of Glasgow-born psychiatrist R. D. Laing, who argued that normality entailed adjusting ourselves to the mystification of an alienating and depersonalizing world. The film reprises the vacillating responses to his radical views and the less forgiving responses to Laing’s latter career shift from eminent psychiatrist to enterprising celebrity by weaving archival material with Fowler’s own filmic observations alongside a soundtrack of field recordings with recorded music by Éric La Casa, Jean-Luc Guionnet and Alasdair Roberts.

Luke Fowler

Luke Fowler (b. 1978, Glasgow) is an artist, filmmaker and musician based in Glasgow. His work explores the limits and conventions of biographical and documentary filmmaking, and has often been compared to the British Free Cinema of the 1950s. Working with archival footage, photography and sound, Fowler’s filmic montages create portraits of intriguing, counter cultural figures, including Scottish psychiatrist R. D. Laing and English composer Cornelius Cardew.
