In this film-essay Bernardo Bertolucci gives a first-hand account of cinema. It is a journey told in three languages (Italian, English and German) across the identity of an authentic and extraordinary metteur en scène.
After a two-year long project,
Luca Guadagnino and Walter Fasano have produced the film-documentary Bertolucci on Bertolucci, patiently and passionately looking into over three hundred hours of archival footage from around the world.

Director's Biography

Walter Fasano
Film editor, scriptwriter and composer
Born in 1970, he graduated in Film History from the University of Bologna. He then attended the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (Italian National Film School) where he obtained his diploma with Roberto Perpignani. He therefore started his career as film editor. The year 1996 marked his debut with Tonino De Bernardi. He then met Luca Guadagnino, with whom he has since established a long lasting friendship and collaboration. He has edited almost all the director’s works and has taken part in the writing of the script for the film I Am Love. As film editor he has worked both on blockbuster movies as well as auteur films by directors such as Dario Argento, Ferzan Ozpetek, Lucio Pellegrini, Maria Sole Tognazzi and Stefano Mordini. As composer he has worked for documentaries and theatre plays.

Luca Guadagnino
Film director, scriptwriter and producer
Born in Palermo in 1971, he spent his childhood in Ethiopia. The film “The Protagonists” marked his debut as a director (65th Venice Contemporary Film Festival). Four feature films followed: “Mundo Civilizado”, “Cuoco Contadino”, “Melissa P”. and “Io sono l’Amore” (I am Love). The latter was nominated at the 82nd Academy Awards for best achievement in costume design, at the 68th edition of the Golden Globe and the 64th edition of the BAFTA - British Academy Awards- for Best Foreign Film. He was a member of the 67th Venice Contemporary Film Festival’s jury, which was presided over by Quentin Tarantino.
