Jorge Suárez-Quiñones Rivas

Jorge Suárez-Quiñones Rivas (León, 1992) is a filmmaker, visual artist and teacher. Graduated in Architecture at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid, Universidad Politécnica, with scholarships at The University of Tokyo and Shanghai Tongji University. He has studied the "VideoLAB" program of Contemporary Audiovisual Creation and Practice at the School of Visual Arts LENS and the 'Audiovisual Revolutions' program at the LAV Audiovisual Laboratory. Artist-in-Residence at WIELS Contemporary Art Center, Brussels (2021), with the support of Acción Cultural Española, and in the "Artists in Aso" program (2019), with the support of the government of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. Recipient of Grants for contemporary creation and national and international mobility 2022/2023 (Madrid City Council), INJUVE Grants for Young Creation 2021/2022, Grants for Visual Arts Creation 2021 (Community of Madrid), XXXII Circuitos Artes Plásticas 2021 (Community of Madrid) and Grants for artistic research, creation and production in the field of visual arts 2020 (Ministry of Culture and Sport, Directorate General of Fine Arts). His work has been the subject of the following individual audiovisual programs: "So shall things kindle a light for others" at WIELS Contemporary Art Center and MUSAC; "Cineclube with Jorge Suárez-Quiñones Rivas" at Canal 180, Portugal; "Healing Ray" at the Festival de Artes Visuales Expandidas RAYO 2021 at Cineteca Matadero and at S8 Mostra de Cinema Periférico; "Blitz #36: Jorge Suárez-Quiñones Rivas" at Zumzeig Barcelona; "Jorge Suárez-Quiñones Rivas Film Anthology" and "Around the solar year: in-camera edited super-8 films by Jorge Suárez-Quiñones Rivas," both at Tokyo Image Forum; "The Films of Jorge Suárez-Quiñones and Guillermo Pozo," at Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, and "Amijima. Jorge Suárez-Quiñones Rivas", programmed at MUSAC by the Contemporary Cinema Dialogue Group. His work has also been programmed at IFFR Rotterdam, FICUNAM, First Look (Museum of Moving Images New York), Fracto Experimental Film Encounter Berlin, Nomadica LABA, Punto de Vista, Filmadrid, Márgenes, Riga Pasaules Film Festival, Documenta Madrid, Curtocircuíto, Now&After (Artplay Design Center Moscow), Alcine, Cine Estudio Círculo Bellas Artes, CGAC, CGAI or La Neomudéjar. He is part of the online archives and catalogs IFFR Unleashed, Rencontres Internationales Paris-Berlin, MUBI's Notebook, Filmscalpel and Márgenes VOD. He has been part of the group exhibitions "Cúmulos" (Sala Amadís, Madrid, 2023; curated by Marta Ramos-Yzquierdo), "Todo lo que era sólido se desvanece en el aire" (Sala de Arte Joven, Madrid, 2021; curated by Joaquín Jesús Sánchez), "Caldera" (Takechi Gallery, Kumamoto, 2019; curated by Aso World Cultural Heritage Residency), "Intruso" (Salon, Madrid, 2019; curated by Bernardo José de Souza and Isabella Lenzi), "With or Without the Sun. Chris Marker, the film-essay, and the meeting with Japan" (SixtyEight Art Institute, Copenhagen, 2018 and Enfants Space, Hamburg, 2019; curated by Staffan Boije af Gennäs and Christopher Sand-Iversen) and "Becoming" (Spanish Pavilion of the Venice Architecture Biennale, 2018; curated by Atxu Amann). He has been teaching and tutoring audiovisual projects at the LAV Audiovisual Laboratory since 2017 and at the TAI University School of Arts since 2021 (module 'Heterodoxias Fílmicas' in the Master in Film Directing and subject 'Taller de experimental' in the Degree in Cinematography and Audiovisual Arts). She has been teaching the Master in Architectural Communication MAca in the course 2018-2019 (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid + Universidad Complutense de Madrid).
