Filmed between 1949 and 1963 and edited in 1976, these six reels of Jonas Mekas's film diaries begin with his arrival in New York, showing the Lithuanian immigrant community and their efforts to adapt to a new land. He then goes on to record his first contacts with the city's artistic circles, interspersed with major worldwide events, until he begins to find moments of happiness.
“In these six painful reels I tried to indicate how it feels to be in exile. The title describes the mood of a Displaced Person who hasn't yet forgotten the native country but hasn't gained a new one." - Jonas Mekas
Jonas Mekas (1922-2019) was a Lithuanian filmmaker, writer and curator, considered the godfather of American avant-garde cinema and the definitive representative of diary filmmaking. In addition to his work in film preservation and dissemination with the creation and development of the Anthology Film Archives, films by him such as Walden (1969) and Lost Lost Lost (1976) have informed the path of more and more filmmakers around the world.
