Synopsis
"I would hardly say you have no plants in your house, I'd say you just have an expanded definition of house," says a friend to Sundog. The lead character in this film is a 60-year-old man living in the middle of the Sonora desert in Arizona. A sensitive exploration of this man and his desert, of his sustainable way of life and unshakable resistance to that other way of life he calls the “dominant culture”. Somewhere between an observation of his day-to-day (hunting, gathering, searching for hallucinogens of animal origin) and the possibility of a future in which that culture of vigilance and destruction gets kept out of the desert. Lisa Marie Malloy
Lisa Marie Malloy, born in 1994 in Seattle, is an artist committed to devotional and engaged modes of filmmaking. She seeks to employ cinema as an expedient means to experience the sentient world anew. A Shape of Things to Come is her first feature-length film.
JP Sniadecki
JP Sniadecki is an anthropologist-filmmaker whose work includes El Mar La Mar (2017), The Iron Ministry (2014), Yumen (2013), People’s Park (2012), Foreign Parts (2010), and Demolition (2008). In collaboration with Zhu Rikun, he runs a 16mm film workshop in Songzhuang, Beijing, China. He is a 2017 Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, and the Director of the MFA program in Documentary Media at Northwestern University.
