CENTER FOR ARTISTIC RESIDENCIES.
The Center for Artistic Residencies of Matadero Madrid is a hub for various artists and cultural agents who share their work, research and creation processes on a daily basis. It also serves as a place for experimentation, where creators and researchers develop projects related to the space that is hosting us, the transformations of the city and contemporary society. In short, a collective memory that helps us understand the present moment we are living in.
INTERMEDIAE: MEMORY IS OURS: PREVIEW AND CONVERSATION
Intermediae offers an interdisciplinary session addressing the production of localized memories and their role in shaping a city’s heritage from both tangible and intangible perspectives. To this end, the session will draw upon the perspectives and voices of the artistic collective Terrorismo de Autor and the Grupo de Historia Urbana Barrio del Pilar, creators of the film La memoria es nuestra, which is slated for release in the fall of 2025 in collaboration with Intermediae and Cineteca. At this session, a preview of the film will be held in a format where a dialogue with the filmmakers can be shared on the production process of collective memory of the Barrio del Pilar, its urban origins, and the struggles that transpired during the transition to democracy. This dialogue will also involve participants from various generations of the neighborhood movement. Together with Documenta Madrid, Intermediae once again addresses the crossroads of critical, cultural, artistic and experimental urban practices that involve other ways of looking at, intervening in and experiencing the city. The intention of the session goes beyond all nostalgia, because of everything that happened, what’s relevant is the parts that help in thinking and building the present.
MEDIALAB. RESEARCHING HEAVEN AND EARTH.
In the first scene of Incendies (2003), Wadji Mouawad makes use of mathematics and a diagram of an impossible polygonal house, into which each member of a family is placed at an angle, in such a way that they cannot see the full reality of the other family members due to the obtuse corners formed as the figure is made more complex. Doing research entails summoning the resolve to take positions that are more vulnerable and exposed to the unknown. It is only from those places that we can partially understand the other, unearth their history, form more accurate descriptions, thereby transcending the strict narratives imposed by governments, academies, disciplines, traditions and, of course, our own family.
The Argentinian creator and teacher Maia Gattás Vargas is currently developing her project Atmospheric Research in the year‑long Situated Research residencies at the Medialab of Matadero Madrid. For her project, she looks to the skies and the earth, to meteorology and its representation, examining the thinkers, scientists and artists who have shaped our vision of climate at a time when we urgently need new images for understanding the climate crisis.
Discussion with Paola Lagos Labbé, researcher and teacher, where we will discuss the relationship between first‑person cinema, the use of audiovisual archives and the forms of memory and mourning.
