A product of its time, cinema was born during the century of scientific and technological revolutions, and of the various European occupations of lands around the world. Such was the case for late 19th century Belgium, when the magic lantern served as a tool for the colonial project in the Congo. Through a series of hand-painted images and the tenebrism of phantasmagoria, this film essay reflects on how images can be a tool for controlling and sustaining a system of ideas. (KS)

Hannes Verhoustraete (Belgium, 1986) is a filmmaker, teacher and researcher at KASK / School of Arts Ghent. He is a writer and editor for the online film magazine Sabzian. Un pays plus beau qu’avant (2019) was his debut. His latest film Broken View was released in 2023 and premiered at Courtisane Festival. The film played at many festival in Belgium and abroad and won prizes in Pesaro Film Festival, Mostra internazionale del nuovo cinema in Genova and Brussels Art Film Festival.
