Synopsis

A product of its time, cinema was born during the century of scientific and technological revolutions, and of the various European occupations of lands around the world. Such was the case for late 19th century Belgium, when the magic lantern served as a tool for the colonial project in the Congo. Through a series of hand-painted images and the tenebrism of phantasmagoria, this film essay reflects on how images can be a tool for controlling and sustaining a system of ideas. (KS)
