Documenta Madrid reaches its XVII edition in 2020. Once again, the Madrid International Film Festival of the City Council will meet with the Madrid public, between May 4 and 10, to spread the best contemporary and non-contemporary cinema Fiction from all over the world.

From today until February 20, the festival keeps open its call for films for its three sections -International, National and Fugas- that represent an economic endowment in prizes of more than 45,000 euros for the winners of the different competitions.

Both the participation rules and the movie registration form can be consulted online at the festival website www.documentamadrid.com.

Sections and awards

The festival maintains three Competitive sections -International, National and Fugas- with different awards, with the novelty that long and short films will qualify for the prizes of each section on equal terms.

Each of the three Competitive Sections - International Competition, National Competition, and Fugas Competition - will present two prizes: the Jury Prize for the Best Film, endowed with € 10,000 for each competition, and Special Jury Prize, endowed with € 5,000. In this way, the festival wants to multiply the support for creative freedom, without distinctions or classifications in relation to the duration of the films. In addition, the films of the three competitions may qualify for the Cineteca Madrid public awards, failed by voting of the spectators and each endowed with € 1,000.

Participation and selection

Among the participation requirements published in the regulations of the XVIII edition of the DocumentaMadrid Festival, it is included that all the films must have been completed after January 1, 2019.

Registration is completely free and will be done exclusively online through the official website of the festival. The deadline for presenting documentary films will remain open until February 20, 2020. Any questions related to the interpretation of the regulations or the registering process will be attended by the festival team at info@documentamadrid.com.

Guest curators

The festival, under the direction of Cineteca Madrid, will feature two prestigious guest curators this year. Cecilia Barrionuevo, artistic director of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, and James Lattimer, programmer of the Berlinale Forum, join the festival with the mission of transferring their professional experience in the international field of contemporary cinema to the project.

Cecilia Barrionuevo

Artistic Director of the Mar del Plata International Film Festival, where she has been a programmer since 2010. Degree in Social Communication from the University of Córdoba (UNC) and Master Documentary Film Creation from the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB). In 2013 he won the Leo Dratfield Professional Development Fellowship Scholarship, to participate in the Flaherty Film Seminar, New York, USA. She is co-programmer of Neighboring Scenes: New Latin American Cinema in the Film Society of Lincoln Center, in New York City, and has collaborated as a programmer in different festivals and museums. She is co-editor of the Las Naves Cine collection, and has contributed film writings and essays in various cultural publications, magazines and books.

James Lattimer 

James Lattimer is a film curator, critic, and filmmaker. He studied Film Studies and Spanish (Magister Artium) at the Freie Universtät, Berlin. He has been a member of the Berlinale Forum selection committee since 2011 and has curated film series for Arsenal – Institute for Film and Video Art and Volksbühne Berlin. He started working for the Viennale in 2018 and became a programming consultant there in 2019. He co-directed the experimental documentary short All Still Orbit with Dane Komljen, and co-wrote Dane Komljen’s upcoming second feature A Treatise on Limnology. His writing on cinema has appeared in Cinema Scope, Sight and Sound, The Brooklyn Rail, Film Comment and Fireflies, among others. He recently edited Textur#1: Angela Schanelec with Eva Sangiorgi, the first in a new book series on contemporary filmmakers published by the Viennale.
