Ësáasi Eweera, one of the last kings of the Bubi people of Bioko, Equatorial Guinea, and a thorn in the side of the Spanish colonial powers, died in 1904 under mysterious circumstances. This unsolved case is now reopened today, starting with his rise to the throne and continuing all the way through to the reverberations of his death in the present. Oral accounts, archive footage and newly shot images are woven together into a vital, wonderfully heterogeneous essay: a detective story, an indictment of colonialism and a swansong to the Bubi culture, countless textures rubbing against one another, like history itself.
