A major blackout shrouds Cuba in darkness. The streets have become restless, uncertainty abounds. The glow of bonfires grows and the light stands as a symbol of the end of an era. Through a mother's story to her son, we learn of a vision that has been tormenting her for some time. Thanks to the rigor of its visuals and sound, History is Written at Night swings back and forth like a pendulum between reality and dystopia, calm and danger. (IG)

Alejandro Alonso Estrella (Cuba, 1987) is an award-winning short documentary filmmaker, who graduated in Documentary Direction from Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) in Havana. The Farewell (2014) had its world premiere at IDFA and amongst other prizes, won Best Documentary at Gibara Film Festival. His first feature documentary, The Project (2017), premiered at Visions du Réel and was awarded the FIPRESCI Prize at DOK Leipzig. During 2017 and 2019, Alonso Estrella coordinated the Alternative Cinema master programme at EICTV. In 2021 he was selected as a Resident of the Spanish Film Academy to work on the writing of The Star.
