An exceptional year requires an exceptional festival. After being postponed from May, Documenta Madrid is now putting on a hybrid edition that will combine face-to-face and online screenings while maintaining its ongoing mission to function as a meeting point, as a space for reflection, as an open forum for images of all categories, modes, and formats, and as a possible map for navigating our complicated present.
Placing an emphasis on the importance of discovering films collectively in theaters while also embracing the advantages of online screenings, the festival will take place physically between December 9 and 13, supplemented by screenings on FILMIN that will continue until December 20.
The 17th edition of the festival shines forth in the middle of winter, as does this year’s set of posters created by upcoming photographer Geray Mena, dovetailing perfectly with a selection of films that will stick in the memory, encourage us to reflect, invite us to get together and discuss, and give us a well-needed burst of light and color.
Thank you to everyone who has made this edition possible: the filmmakers, producers, distributors, and other collaborators. Thank you to the audiences who have accompanied us over many years and who form an essential part of Documenta Madrid. And thank you to our wonderful festival team for working tirelessly in putting together a festival under the most difficult of conditions.
