Synopsis
Directed by Lawrence Abu Hamdan, filmmaker Mahdi Fleifel gives a moving monologue in a building straddling the U.S.-Canadian border. The story focuses on Hernandez v. Mesa, a court case of an unarmed Mexican youth shot dead by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in 2010. 45th Parallel uses theatrics, playfulness, and emotion to map out the complicated dimensions of what a border actually is. Lawrence Abu Hamdan is an independent investigator or Private Ear. His investigations focus on sound and linguistics. His work looks into the political effects of listening, using various kinds of audio to explore its effects on human rights and law.
