Born in 1964 in the Cambodian capital city of Phnom Penh, Rithy Panh is a world-renowned feature and documentary filmmaker. During his childhood, his country underwent great political upheaval and he was forced into the work camps of the Khmer Rouge. In 1979 he escaped and crossed the Thai border. He settled in France and there began his film studies at the National Film School of France. For his first documentary, Site 2, he won the Grand Prix du Documentaire at the Amiens Festival. Since then, he has devoted his film work to the historical issue of the Democratic Kampuchea and its consequences in modern-day Cambodia, making his films into first-hand documents on the subject.
