Biography of the director

Nicolas Philibert
Nicolas Philibert

He was born in 1951 in Nancy, France. He co-directed his first documentary with Gérard Mordillat in 1978. In His Master's Voice (La voix de son maître) a dozen bosses of leading industrial groups discuss power, hierarchy and control. After shooting various mountaineering and sports films, Philibert started making documentaries, all of which earned theatrical releases: La Ville Louvre (1990), Le Pays des sourds (1992), Un animal, des animaux (1995), La Moindre des choses (1996), as well as a film essay: Qui sait? (1998) In 2001, he directed Être et avoir, about a "single class" school in a French mountain village. The film was selected at the Cannes Festival and won the 2002 Prix Louis Delluc. In Retour en Normandie (2007), he returns to the setting of a film shot thirty years earlier by René Allio. Nénette (2010) is a strange confrontation with the oldest resident of a Parisian zoo, a female orangutan. With La Maison de la radio (2013), he plunges into the heart of Radio France, to discover what usually escapes our gaze. Shot at a nursing institute, his next film, De chaque instant, was recently released and screened at IDFA. Since 2002, more than one hundred tributes and retrospectives of his films have been held in countless cities across the globe.
