17th Film Festival of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Nayra Sanz Fuentes, director, scriptwriter and producer, holds a degree in Spanish Language and Literature and specialised in contemporary literature. She undertook part of her PhD thesis, due to be submitted in late 2017, at the Humboldt University of Berlin, thanks to a grant from the German organisation DAAD. Her study analyses the national socialist party through the work of film-maker Leni Riefenstahl. With this work she received another grant to study for a Master's in Film Direction in New York, where she lived for two years and started working in film production.
On returning to Spain, she set up the production company Rinoceronte Films, focusing on in-house film production and developing cultural projects. At present, her film work consists of four fictional short films, which have won a number of awards and have been screened at over 140 festivals both in Spain and abroad: Anniversary (2009); Encounter (2010); Things in Common (2011); and Un día cualquiera (2014). Her first full-length film, As Old as the World (2012), won the Pre-Columbian Gold Award at the 29th Bogotá International Film Festival and has been screened at a number of festivals as well as in cultural centres and universities. She was also production manager and editor of the full-length documentary Edificio España, directed by Víctor Moreno and nominated at the 2015 Goya Awards. She has just completed a new short film, Sub Terrae, and is now working on the preproduction stage of another film, La Piscina (The Swimming Pool), with filming due to commence in July. She has also worked as a programme organiser for CicloDocma (Matadero, Madrid) and she teaches on the Master's in Documentary Film at the LENS School of Visual Arts in Madrid.
