For the last 62 years, the Flaherty Film Seminar has provided a fundamental space for exploring contemporary documentary and experimental film. The seminar is named after Robert Flaherty, director of Nanook of the North and regarded by many as the “father of the documentary genre”. Every year, the event gathers all kinds of people in New York – artists, programmers, curators, critics, researchers, teachers, students, activists and film buffs – who sit down together to explore the endless possibilities of the moving image.
The seminar provides an intense, intimate experience through discussions held on a strictly horizontal basis, with the emphasis on removing the conventional barriers between artists, experts and audiences. This allows for open and genuinely participative discussion to take place, a model that invites everyone to experience film differently, as a group, with no preconceptions or prejudices.
We propose a presentation for Spanish audiences, and particularly for Spanish film-makers, of the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar curatorial model, led by:
Daniela Alatorre: Vice Chair and Board Member of the Flaherty International Film Seminar and Flaherty Coordinator in Ambulante (Mexico).
Josetxo Cerdán: Programmer for the Flaherty Film Seminar Open Wounds in 2012.
Ruth Somalo: Programmer of Broken Senses for the Flaherty NYC Winter/Spring Film Series in 2017; she has taken part in five of the seminars.
As well as giving information on the possibilities of attending the Seminar as a participant and how to structure programming proposals for Flaherty NYC, the session will shed light on the processes of curating and selecting guest artists and films.
The programmers will go over the outline of their programmes based on the chosen topics and films and share experiences gained from the process.
The event will include a small sample of short films chosen by Alatorre, Cerdán and Somalo from their previous selections for Flaherty, to give audiences an idea of the curatorial parameters for the Seminar.
