For another year running, DocumentaMadrid shows its commitment to Spanish documentary film. DOCUMENTAMADRID, brings a new addition to the festival’s Official Palmares: the Award for Best Feature-Length Spanish Documentary, which is intended to recognise the increasingly extensive body of films produced in Spain that are achieving widespread acclaim outside our borders. With this new addition, the Panorama of the Spanish Documentary Section, which provides a special overview each year of the cinema of the real produced in Spain, will become a competitive category, as feature-length documentaries never before screened in Spain will be eligible to compete for the award.
A total of 16 films (9 of which are included in the competition)bring us the same number of different images of both our most immediate reality and that of far-off places, with fascinating stories featuring people and landscapes we already know or whose life journeys will captivate our attention. Senior citizens who follow their passions, searching for a second life after retirement, and younger 35-year-olds who question their single state; stories of Latin American women who must leave their children to give them a better future, and single mothers who are considered invisible in Morocco; Ugandan children who play football to escape poverty, and natives who live with foreigners who have fled the city to work with cork oak in the Alentejo; fascinating characters like the former apprentice bullfighter and CNT activist who, as Director of Madrid’s prisons, saved dozens of prisoners loyal to both sides in the war, or the Jewish twins who struggle with their Diogenes Syndrome when rearranging their family home, along with a portrait of the cruelty suffered by animals in many of Spain’s festivities. These are the stories we will see in the competition, in addition to various others that are not in the running. The programme is rounded off by four short films.
