Rojo y negro

Carlos Arévalo
80' / 1942 / Spain
Spanish
English subtitled

Luisa and Miguel are a couple from Madrid who have been together almost since their childhood. Already in their youth and during the Second Republic, they both take on very different political directions: he joins a leftist party, and she joins the Spanish Falange. Since then, their lives will goseparate ways... With this film, the Falangist director Carlos Arévalo made perhaps the only clearly Falangist film ever made in Spain (the colors of the title refer to the flag). Interestingly, two weeks after its premiere at the Capitol cinema in Madrid, in May 1942, and fornever clarified reasons, the film was banned and remained missing until 1996 when it was restored by the Spanish Film Library.
