An American, Robert Jordan (Gary Cooper)a.k.a. "The Englishman", fights in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) within the Lincoln Brigade. He is an expert in special actions behind enemy lines: he has blown up trains, power grids, arms depots. On the eve of a major offensive, the Republicans put him in charge of the destruction of a bridge, the main logistics artery of Franco’s army. Maria (Ingrid Bergman), a young woman who was saved from the firing squad, and Pilar, Pablo's wife, a tough and stubborn man, bothwill participate in the operation and mantain the fighting spirit until the end of the war.
