When I was little I was told that mi grandfather Pepe had died. Later on I found out that he had emmigrated to Argentina after the Civil War to look for a better fortune. Mi grandmother María lost all trace of him after that. On her own she had to leave Spain to be able to bring up her children. That was the beginning of the family diaspora that keeps us scattered through the world. Pepe el andaluz is a voyage against time and the loss of memory. A history which brings forward questions and hides unexpected discoveries: pieces of the fragmented image of my grandfather, of whom I have only an incomplete map.

Director's Biography

Alejandro Alvarado and Concha Barquero (Málaga, 1975) are a personal and profesional couple since 2001. Both of them have a Bachelor’s Degree in Audiovisual Communication at the Universidad de Málaga, and have specialised in creative documentary film and script at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona.Their work explores the living and expresive possibilities of real cinema. From 2001 to 2011 they worked in the television series Tesis, a documentary programme which is aimed at spreading scientific knowledge, produced by Canal Sur Andalucía and awarded with the Best National Programme of Popular Science Award at the XXVI Bienal de Cine Científico de Ronda. Since then, their films have travelled through paths of greater artistic freedom. Alvarado’s first experimental documentary, 1891 voltios, cariño (1999), has received an award at the International Unimovie Festival of Pescara and has been included in famed festivals such as the European Media Art Festival of Osnabrück. His second short film was the creation documentary El espejo del Sr. Rovira (2000) with the special collaboration of the writer Juan Marsé. During this last década, Alvarado and Barquero have co-directed various shorts which explore the borders between fiction and documentary, for example, La Chimenea (2003), Mi hermana (2006) and Tanta gente sola (2011). At the same time, they have directed projects with a clear social tone such as El reverso de la realidad (2007), a documentary film that bangs against the wall of lack of understanding and silence around mental illness, which was awarded the Audience Award at the X Festival de Cine Español de Málaga and the First Prize Award at the Festival de Cine y Discapacidad in Collado Villalba.
