FROM MAMBO TO HIP HOP: A SOUTH BRONX TALE
FROM MAMBO TO HIP HOP: A SOUTH BRONX
Urban Culture

Henry Chalfant
dvd / 55' / 2006 / Estados Unidos

The diverse generations of New Yorkers, mostly Puerto Ricans, who have created certain culturally specific and yet universal art forms. The film examines both the generations that invented the mambo, salsa and hip hop as well as the New York neighborhood of the South Bronx, birthplace of those movements. Those groups have provided and promoted a sense of community: in this often somber urban landscape; music and dance have given strength and meaning to the efforts toward building a community.
