The creation and development of early Cuban film by its founding filmmakers was based on the principles of study-work, which forced it to primarily capture the historic moment underway in Cuba, convulsive and complicated moments of class struggle and later; the study of film by following the principles of the Renaissance instructional workshop. professors to their apprentices. But who were the professors if the natives didn’t have any experience?
Years after the creation of the San Antonio de los Baños International School of Film and Television (1987), a Professorship of Documentary Film was created and integrated into the class curriculum.
In parallel with the regular course, the School organized workshops for original documentary filmmaking aimed at students and graduates majoring in communications,
with a maximum of 150 hours and practical work for applying the principles of the
workshops in training Cuban documentary makers.
And one of those workshops in particular I have called "Miners in the Mine of Life" in the belief that the documentary maker is an artist who looks to the everyday events for raw material. The class was given for the first time last year within the framework of an
agreement between the University Rey Juan Carlos, its Department of Communication
Science I, the Foundation of New Latin American Film, and the San Antonio de los Baños International School of Film and Television. This year the experience has been repeated, with the addition of sponsorship from the City of Fuenlabrada and the cooperation of the International Documentary Festival of Madrid.
You will all have the chance to appreciate a sampling of the work done at those workshops. We hope you enjoy it.
